Carrie Underwood: 8 Straight Number Ones; Straight Talk on Romo and More

Tuesday, November 4th, 2008

Carrie Underwood is far from silent on the charts, she’s enjoying her eighth straight number one with the unaptly named “Just a Dream.”  The American Idol winner is keeping quiet about her personal life though, since her comments about her ex Tony Romo angered his current squeeze, Jessica Simpson.

In an interview appearing in Elle Magazine’s December Issue Underwood says, “I would never mean to say anything to hurt anybody or stir up anything, because I’m just not about drama…at all.”

Yet Underwood managed to stir up plenty of drama this election day when she claimed that she “loses all respect” for celebrities who publicly back politicians.

“It’s saying that the American public isn’t smart enough to make their own decisions,” she told TV Guide. “I would never want anybody to vote for anything or anybody just because I told them to.”

One thing Underwood isn’t telling is who she’s dating these days, although she will tell you who she’s not seeing:  Olympic star Michael Phelps.

“I swear on everything, on my job, on my house, my dog…That’s how serious I am,” she tells Elle. “It’s all just a lie.”

The Asphalt Rises To Greet Daughtry (In Court)

Monday, October 6th, 2008

Looks like not everyone loves former American Idol contestant Chris Daughtry’s song “Feels Like Tonight.”  Randy Mazick of the band The Asphalt is taking Daughtry to court for allegedly stealing his band’s song “Tonight.”  Mazick is also naming Apple in the suit, since they distributed the song via iTunes.

Take a listen to The Asphalt’s Tune “Tonight”:

So, what do you think?  Did Daughtry steal the song, or is it a coincidence?  Comment and let us know.

Archuleta Acts and aMAZEs

Thursday, October 2nd, 2008

He may not have won American Idol, but that other David can’t boast a corn maze constructed in his honor.  Folks in Lehi, Utah paid a most unique tribute to their local hero at the 13th Annual Cornbelly’s Corn Maze and Pumpkin Fest at Thanksgiving Point.

David Archuleta Corn Field

If you can’t celebrate fall in Utah, you can catch Archuleta closer to home (in your living room, in fact) on Nickelodeon’s iCarly this season.  He’ll play a contestant in a talent competition called (wink, wink) America Sings.

Archuleta’s self-titled CD is set to be released on November 11th, with David Cook’s release slated for the following Tuesday, November 18th.  As of this writing, Cook’s ranked #31 in music on Amazon.com with Archuleta coming in at #48.  Whose music do you think will sell more, or do you think most Idol fans will be adding both artists to their collection/iPod?  Comment and let us know.

Spotlight Shining for Jennifer Hudson

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008

She only came in seventh place on American Idol, but she’s the only one to date who’s an Academy Award winner.  Now Jennifer Hudson is set for more accolades with the release of her self-titled disc.

Vibe senior associate editor Keith Murphy told USA Today that “Spotlightcould have been sung by Rihanna or another pop or R&B act, but (Hudson) takes it somewhere else. She can belt out a song and make you cry.”

Hudson has no reason to shed any tears but tears of joy these days.  She recently got engaged to reality show contestant David Otunga, and her latest film The Secret Life of Bees, the follow up to her role in the box office smash Sex and the City, comes out October 17th.

So the question is raised again — is it better not to win American Idol?  Comment and let us know.

Idol’s Comment Sparks Controversy

Tuesday, September 16th, 2008

Jordin Sparks has no regrets about scolding MTV VMAs host Russell Brand for mocking purity rings, but she may take it “One Step At A Time” in choosing her words in the future.

“It’s something I feel strongly about. I wish I would’ve worded it differently - that somebody who doesn’t wear a promise ring isn’t necessarily a slut - but I can’t take it back now,” the American Idol winner told ContactMusic.com.

“It was a split-second thing, and it came out kind of wrong. Still, I don’t regret it.”

Other aspects of Sparks’ career are definitely going right.  Her hits “Tattoo” and “No Air” (Duet with Chris Brown) are all over the radio, and her new single looks hitbound too.

Will Sparks’ outspoken nature help or hurt her relationship with her fans?  Comment and let us know.

“It’s Not Over” For Daughtry

Wednesday, August 13th, 2008

On September 9th, 19 Records will re-release Daughtry’s debut CD in a new deluxe version. The upcoming release will feature a bonus DVD and four bonus audio tracks, including an acoustic version of the band’s huge hit “Home,” “What About Now” as performed on the Idol Gives Back TV special, and a cover of the Foreigner favorite “Feels Like the First Time.”

Daughtry, as a supporter of One, which raises awareness of global hunger and poverty, will take part in events surrounding both the Democratic and Republican conventions this year. “The band’s participation will spotlight One and its mission while focusing attention on the opportunities the next president and Congress will have to make a major difference in the fight against global poverty, hunger and disease,” says 19 Records in a press release.

Many CDs like Daughtry’s are being repackaged with extras and re-released. How do you feel about this trend? Comment and let us know.

American Idol Winner Cooking Up New CD with Cavallo

Tuesday, August 5th, 2008

RCA Records announced today that American Idol winner David Cook’s anxiously awaited CD will be produced by multi-platinum hit maker Rob Cavallo (Green Day American Idiot).

Cook has stated in the press that he was committed to making a rock album, and in an interview with Entertainment Weekly discussed the possibility that his current hit single “The Time of My Life” might not make the cut for the new disc.

RCA Records reports that Cook set the record for the most new entries by an artist in the 50-year history of the Hot 100, with 11 songs entering the chart dated June 7, 2008. That broke the record of six new entries in one week. Cook’s 11 songs were led by “The Time of My Life,” which debuted at No. 3, making it the highest new entry of 2008. “The Time of My Life” debuted at No 1 on two other charts, the Hot Digital Songs and the Hot Digital Tracks.

In more surprising news, Cook told Entertainment Weekly that label executive Clive Davis has no involvement with the Idol champion’s upcoming release. Davis famously clashed with first Idol winner Kelly Clarkson over the making of her most recent album My December.

Cook’s as yet untitled CD is slated for release this fall.

What are your thoughts on Clive Davis’ non-involvement with David Cook’s CD? Comment and let us know.
